Abstract

This paper presents a critical study of the narrations related to Ḥajjat al-Wadāʿ, as preserved in Musnad Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, within the framework of Fiqh al-Sīrah. It initiates with a small biography of Imām Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī (d. 307 A.H.), his status as a scholar amongst the 3rd-century ḥadīth authorities, and finally the characteristic features of his Musnad, containing over seven thousand narrations arranged by Companions. Seventy-seven of these narrations deal with the Farewell Pilgrimage. The research further discusses the juristic and spiritual dimensions derived from these reports on issues such as the obligation and types of ḥajj, the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) method of performing ḥajj, the integration of ʿumrah and ḥajj, and the rituals of wuqūf ʿArafah, ramy al-jamrāt, sacrifice, ṭawāf, saʿy, and the farewell sermon. As the paper examines these narrations from the perspective of Fiqh al-Sīrah, it outlines the Prophetic model as the ultimate practical demonstration of Islamic law and ethics. This is done in the process of concluding that Musnad Abū Yaʿlā bears a valuable record from a juristic and historical point of view regarding Ḥajjat al-Wadāʿ; indeed, the perfect balance between ritual worship and moral instruction is achieved in the final sermon by the Prophet.
