Determining relationship between different parameters of Jand (Prosopis cineraria) under annual lopping at Rakh Goharwala (Thal)
Abstract
This study assessed the relationship between stem diameter and growth/biomass parameters in Prosopis cineraria (Jand) trees subjected to annual lopping in Rakh Goharwala, Punjab, using data from 2004-2008. The research aimed to create dependable correlations between diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree attributes such as leaf/twig biomass and branch biomass. Regression analysis showed quadratic models offered the best fit for most relationships. A strong correlation was observed between DBH and leaf/twig biomass, and branch biomass, indicating DBH's reliability in predicting fodder production. Crown area also displayed a strong dependence on DBH, while stem height and crown radius exhibited weaker associations. The findings confirmed DBH as a useful, non-destructive predictor for biomass estimation, valuable for rangeland managers and foresters, particularly in arid and semi-arid environments where P. cineraria is a significant fodder source for local livestock and communities.
