Abstract

The Qur’ānic account of the meeting between Prophet Mūsā (ʿalayhi al-salām) and al-Khiḍr, as mentioned in Sūrat al-Kahf (18:60–82), contains profound lessons of guidance, patience, and humility in the pursuit of knowledge. Prophet Mūsā, one of the Ulu’l-ʿAzm (the resolute messengers) and the one honored with direct speech from Allah (Kalimullāh), was divinely guided to seek knowledge from al-Khiḍr, whom Allah had granted special wisdom. Although scholars have differed on certain details regarding al-Khiḍr’s identity, such discussions are secondary to the central moral and spiritual lessons emphasized in the Qur’ān. The narrative illustrates that Allah alone is All-Knowing and that His wisdom may transcend human understanding. From this story, believers learn the importance of patience in the face of trials, trust in Allah’s divine plan, and the recognition that apparent hardships may conceal greater wisdom and mercy. Furthermore, the encounter highlights the virtue of seeking truth with humility and caution, rather than hastily following assumptions or unfounded claims.
