Abstract

The family system in Pakistan represents one of the most enduring and essential institutions shaping the country’s moral, social, and religious identity. Historically, it has functioned as a vital source of emotional security, ethical education, and social cohesion. Rooted deeply in Islamic principles and reinforced by cultural traditions, the Pakistani family structure has ensured intergenerational continuity and communal harmony. However, in the contemporary era, this system faces a complex web of socio-cultural and economic challenges that threaten its stability and core values. Rapid globalization, the influence of Western liberal thought, media-driven obscenity, increasing materialism, delayed and non-traditional marriages, rising divorce rates, and weakening parental authority are reshaping the moral fabric of society. These factors have not only altered gender roles and family responsibilities but have also eroded the sanctity of marriage, transforming it from a sacred covenant into a contractual and often fragile relationship. The rise of individualism and the diminishing role of religious guidance in personal and familial decisions have further exacerbated this moral crisis. This analytical study explores these multidimensional challenges with reference to Islamic teachings, sociological perspectives, and contemporary realities in Pakistan. It argues that a revival of Islamic moral consciousness, equitable socio-economic policies, and a responsible media culture are essential for restoring the traditional balance, dignity, and functionality of the family institution in Pakistan.
