Cryptocurrency: Introduction, Types and the Shari'ah Perspective

Cryptocurrency is a significant issue of the modern era, and not much time has passed since its emergence. Regarding its history, it is said that in 2008, a western thinker named Satoshi Nakamoto introduced the concept, and in 2009, he launched the first cryptocurrency based on this concept, known has Bitcoin. He involved several experts in this idea, but initially, its growth was very slow, and people remained uncertain about it. Eventually, Satoshi Nakamoto withdrew from the project and the business altogether. After his withdrawal, his associates carried the idea forward, and it gradually gained such acceptance that in many parts of the world, it began to be commonly used has a medium of exchange. Debates were held on this concept in several countries, academic gathering were organized, and many writings were published on the subject. Scholars presented their respective opinion in the light of Islamic law. Initially, the picture of this concept was not very clear, but now the situation has become much more transparent, and the Shariah perspective on the idea has been examined. In the present article, and effort has been made to analyze the issue in the light of the history, definition, and Shariah status of cryptocurrency, as well as various Urdu Fatawas (Islamic regal rulings). The article seeks to clarify what guidance Islam provides on this concept, what objections, or difficulties exist within it, and to discuss all these matters clearly and from an Islamic legal perspective.
