Abstract

This study examines the signs and characteristics of hypocrites as described in the primary Islamic sources, the Holy Quran and Hadith, which serve as foundational references for knowledge and guidance for Muslims, and more broadly for humanity at large. The Quran discusses the traits of hypocrites across multiple chapters, including Al-Imran, Al-Nisa, Al-Anfal, Al-Tawbah, Al-Ankabut, Al-Ahzab, Al-Fath, Al-Hadid, Al-Hashr, and Al-Tahrim, while Surah Al-Munafiqoon provides a particularly focused depiction of their attributes. Similarly, the major Hadith collections—such as Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah, Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Al-Muwatta’ of Imam Malik, and Mishkat al-Masabih—offer detailed insights into the behavioral indicators of hypocrisy. This analytical study synthesizes these scriptural references to present a coherent understanding of the moral, social, and spiritual dimensions of hypocrisy in Islamic teachings.
