Abstract

Orientalist scholarship on Islamic sources has significantly influenced modern academic discourse about Islam, the Qur’an, Hadith, and Sīrah. This article critically examines the major objections raised by selected Orientalists regarding the authenticity and reliability of primary Islamic sources. It analyzes their views on the compilation of the Qur’an, the authority of Hadith literature, and the personality and life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The study evaluates the arguments of prominent Orientalists such as Theodor Nöldeke, Arthur Jeffery, Ignaz Goldziher, Joseph Schacht, and William Muir in the light of Qur’anic teachings, classical Islamic scholarship, historical evidence, and rational analysis. The article argues that many Orientalist interpretations were shaped by theological prejudice, colonial interests, and methodological bias. It concludes that balanced and objective scholarly engagement is essential for understanding Islamic sources accurately and for responding effectively to misconceptions propagated in Orientalist discourse.
