The Revolutionary and Movement-Oriented Aspects of the Seerah in Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s Book Practical Aspects of the Life of the Prophet (PBUH)

Abstract

This study examines the revolutionary and activist dimensions of the Sīrat of the Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) as interpreted by Maulānā Abū al-Kalām Āzād, with particular reference to his work Sīrat-e Rasūl ke ʿAmalī Pehlū. The study explores Āzād’s understanding of the Sīrat as a dynamic and practical framework for individual transformation, moral development, social reform, collective organization, and constructive activism. According to Āzād, the Sīrat of the Prophet (PBUH) is not merely a historical record or a collection of devotional narratives; rather, it provides a comprehensive practical model for shaping both the individual and society. He particularly emphasizes those aspects of the Prophetic life that cultivate action, perseverance, self-confidence, a sense of purpose, and social responsibility.

The study further demonstrates that Āzād understands genuine revolution not simply as a change in political authority, but as a comprehensive process of intellectual, ethical, spiritual, and social transformation. In his interpretation of the Prophetic struggle, leadership, consultation (shūrā), discipline, sacrifice (īthār), perseverance (ṣabr), steadfastness (istiqāmat), and collective responsibility emerge as essential principles of successful reformative and activist movements. He presents the Prophet’s (PBUH) Daʿwah and struggle as a practical example of sustained commitment in the face of opposition and difficulties, emphasizing that temporary setbacks are natural stages in the pursuit of higher objectives.

The study also finds that Āzād seeks to develop among Muslims a sense of self-confidence, responsibility, and active engagement with contemporary challenges. His interpretation discourages mere glorification of the Muslim past and instead calls for practical guidance from the Prophetic model in addressing present-day intellectual, moral, and social problems. The findings indicate that movement, struggle, reform (iṣlāḥ), sacrifice, unity (ittiḥād), leadership (qiyādah), ethical character (akhlāq), and collective responsibility constitute the central elements of Āzād’s activist interpretation of the Sīrat. His approach is therefore not based on emotional enthusiasm alone but on the integration of sound thought, ethical character, and practical strategy. The study concludes that Sīrat-e Rasūl ke ʿAmalī Pehlū presents the Prophetic Sīrat as an enduring source of intellectual, moral, and practical guidance for constructive social transformation and contemporary reformative movements.
