Status of Women in Sacred Hindu Literature: Historical and Textual Analysis
Abstract
The position of women in any society reflects its moral, cultural, and ideological foundations. The Hindu social system, deeply rooted in religious traditions and classical texts, presents a complex and multifaceted view of women’s status. While Hindu scriptures including the Vedas, Dharma shastras, and Smritis, often emphasize respect and spiritual significance for women, social practices have historically imposed various limitations on their roles and rights. It also looks into how these textual ideals were put into practice as social norms during various historical eras. Understanding this contrast between textual ideals and social realities is essential for a comprehensive analysis of women’s position in Hindu society. This study seeks to critically examine the religious and social dimensions that have shaped the status of women across different historical periods. This study aims to present a balanced and critical understanding of the position of women in the Hindu social system by employing a qualitative and analytical research methodology. The findings contribute to interfaith and comparative social discourse by highlighting the complexities and contradictions inherent in traditional social structures.
