The word "Iman" used in the Holy Quran and its selected Urdu translations: an analytical study

Abstract

In the Holy Qur'an, the word "Iman" comes with different salutations, which convey multiple meanings. The lexicographers have enclosed all these meanings of the word "Iman" in the meanings of confirmation, verbal confession, and expression of humility. There are books on the uses and meanings of the word "Iman" in the Qur'an, but there is diversity in the translations of the word "Iman" at different places among the Urdu translators of the Qur'an. It is necessary to know what is the style of the translators in the Urdu translations of the word "Iman", what are the reasons for the variation in the translation at the same place by different translators. Moreover, knowing the nature of this difference, relevance may take place. For this purpose, five selected Urdu translations of the Qur'an, representative of the subcontinent, have been reviewed, which will clarify the linguistic evolution along with the diversity in the translation. The agreement in the translations of the word "Iman" will also be helpful for the agreement in the interpretation and interpretation of beliefs.
