Abstract

In the field of social life, women in the subcontinent had a great role in charitable works such as setting up mosques, schools, digging wells, planting trees and gardens, helping the poor and needy, and helping poor students with funds. The sections reserved for women in the palaces of the Mughal sultans were called "the harem" as they were called "Mahal". The wives of the kings, dancers, divas, and maids lived in the harem. Women joined the harem in various ways by marriage, birth, purchase, or by direct order from the sultan or by gift. This article appraises the role of woman in social sphere in mughal era in sub-continent.
