The Study of Linguistics: Its Origin and Development through Different Eras

Abstract

This study is an overbearing effort to introduce linguistics and study its origin and development through different historical eras in the past, and its consequences into the society. The aim of this research was to introduce linguistics and highlight the efforts of the former and later linguists in the field of linguistics and its origin and development. The research methodology used was theoretical and historical. The study was divided into two sections. The first section dealt with an introduction to linguistics and mentioned topics such as the introduction of language, the origin of the word language, the various general theories about the origin of language, the difference between language and tongue and speech, the properties of language, the difference between philology and linguistics, and the difference between sister languages ​​and foreign languages, while the second section revolved around the study of its origin and development through different historical eras, and it showed the efforts of linguists in its formation and development from the tenth century (BC) to the beginning of the modern era, the three levels of the Arabic language, and the branches of linguistics. This article facilitated the concept of linguistics for the general public in general and its lovers in particular, and introduced them to linguistic terms in a very easy way, and also played an important role in understanding the history of linguistics.
