From the Narrative of Meaning to the Narrative of Existence: A Reading of the Compositional and Translational Project of Said Benkirane"

Abstract

"Semiology, as a postmodern approach, is a science concerned with signs and significations, initiated by Ferdinand de Saussure, who presented the subject in its structural form. The structural treatment was the main impetus for addressing it and exploring the linguistic sign in relation to society, which heralded the innovative cultural production of this new science, which was named 'semiology.' Moroccan critics quickly recognized it, such as Mohammed El-Boukri, Said Benkraâ, and other researchers who carried the torch of leadership in this field. Said Benkraâ states: 'At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Swiss linguist Saussure heralded the birth of a new science called 'semiology,' whose mission will be to study the life of signs within social life.' Saussure regarded language as a human activity that transcends its linguistic existence, which can only be considered a means of equal importance. For this researcher, language is a phenomenon that enjoys a special status; he saw it as the most significant of these systems. Indeed, language is the only tool through which the universe is perceived, a perception that quickly shifted semiotics from its linguistic and language domain to the cultural realm by focusing on the text as a cultural system in relation to other systems. This marked the emergence of cultural semiotics, which sprang from the philosophy of symbolic forms, beginning with 'semiosis to the semiotic space.'"
