Abstract

Ghazal has always been one of the central themes of Arabic poetry throught the history. However it is divided into two main streams; namely permissive and platonic. The permissive has been relevant to the physical beauty of beloved and practical desires of lover for his beloved. On the other hand, the platonic spoke of chastity and patience; without any desire of physical love.

In this article we have discussed the historic facts of the platonic Ghazal wherein it originated. Although some effects of platonic Ghazal have been found throughout the history of Arabic literature, however it was Umayyad period when it emerged as a distinctive genre of love poetry. This is what the article is all about.
