Abstract

After the establishment of the Islamic state of Medina, The holy prophet (peace be upon him) decided to send letters to chiefs of tribes and clans, heads of convents, rulers, monarchs and emperors of the world. He forwarded a number of letters over a period of two to three years, inviting them to the fold of Islam. As a result, many of the letters were met with a favorable response and a number of Arab tribes accepted the supremacy of the divine message of Islam. In the same way, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) reinstated many chiefs of tribes and clans upon their positions and ranks and asked his writers to compose letters, land deeds and agreements to grant them their Lands & territories.

This treasure of noble documents of the holy prophet (peace be upon Him) has been preserved in the remarkable books of Ahadith. Several Muhadditheen have produced notable works on this theme. First and the foremost collection on this topic is the Compilation of Amr Ibn al Hazm (R.A.A.). He not only preserved the document written for him by the prophet (peace be upon Him), but also collected his other letters sent to the different clans, particularly of Jews, Christians. However, Around twenty five valuable letters, deeds and injunction were included in the anthology of Amr Ibn Hazm, which subsequently served as an authentic source of information, particularly for Zakat, Charities, rights of the Muslims and non-Muslims, their duties, etc.

This collection of Ibn Hazm was fortunately preserved by Allama Ibn Tooloon in his book Elam us Sa’eleen from the narration of a well-known and eminent Muhaddith of Sindh, Abu Ja’afar Muhammad Ibn Ibrahim Addaibuli (321AH). Out of this valuable collection, six Letters of land awarding have been selected for this article.
