The Importance of Food and Its Safety: A Research Review in the Light of Prophetic Teachings

Food is one of the fundamental necessities of human life, not only serving as a means of physical survival but also influencing health, character, and spiritual well-being. As a comprehensive code of life, Islam provides clear guidance on all aspects of human existence, including the ethics of food consumption and preservation. The Prophetic teachings (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offer profound insights into the responsible and balanced use of food. This research article aims to analyze the importance of food, the etiquettes of its consumption, the condemnation of extravagance, and the emphasis on its protection and preservation as reflected in the Ḥadīth literature. It explores various dimensions of the Prophet’s ﷺ guidance, such as moderation, gratitude, avoidance of wastage, and respect for leftover food to present a holistic Islamic perspective on food ethics. Moreover, the study attempts to contextualize these teachings in light of contemporary global challenges such as food insecurity, wastage, and environmental concerns. This research seeks to highlight the moral and social responsibilities that Islam places on individuals and societies to ensure sustainable and ethical food practices.
