Abstract

The Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Ākhirah) stands as a central tenet of Islamic faith, and its detailed description in the Qur’an has been interpreted by various exegetes with distinct stylistic and methodological approaches. This study presents a comparative analysis of three renowned Urdu exegeses: Ma‘arif al-Quran by Mufti Muhammad Shafi, Zia ul Quran by Pir Karam Shah al-Azhari, and Tabyan al-Quran by Ghulam Rasool Saeedi. It examines how each commentary handles key eschatological themes such as resurrection, reckoning, reward and punishment, heaven and hell and explores the linguistic, theological, and pedagogical styles employed. The research finds that while Ma‘arif al-Quran emphasizes juristic and doctrinal precision with reliance on classical sources, Zia ul Quran integrates spiritual and allegorical dimensions, and Tabyan al-Quran adopts a practical, reform-oriented tone aimed at common readers. The comparative analysis highlights divergent interpretive emphases and sheds light on how textual features shape the reader’s understanding of the afterlife. The study contributes to a deeper appreciation of modern Qur’anic hermeneutics in the Urdu tradition.
