The Contemporary Social and Political Challenges: A Thematic Study of Sūrah al-Baqarah

Abstract

After creating life on earth, Allah Almighty bestowed upon humankind the distinguished status of the noblest of all creations. By creating human beings in pairs, He established the foundation of human society, which represents the collective existence and coexistence of mankind. Allah endowed human beings with the great blessing of intellect, enabling them to think, reason, and explore diverse dimensions of life, resulting in the diversity and expansion of human civilization.

Since the beginning of human history, human societies have faced numerous challenges and problems. However, Allah granted mankind knowledge, intellect, and divine guidance to enable them to address these issues effectively. In addition to human reason, Allah sent His messengers in every age with divine guidance and comprehensive codes of life so that humanity might live according to His principles and laws. Nevertheless, in an effort to facilitate their worldly existence, people adopted various approaches and systems that often led to social disorder and multiple societal problems.

As human societies continue to progress and evolve, they encounter new and complex challenges. Among these are economic, family, social, and political issues that significantly affect the stability and well-being of society. Since Sūrah al-Baqarah was revealed during the Madina period, when the Muslim community had already developed into an organized society, it addresses in detail the social and political challenges faced by the community of Madinah. The sūrah discusses these issues particularly in relation to the Jews, Christians, polytheists, and hypocrites, providing guidance for maintaining social order and political stability.

In the contemporary era, Muslim societies face numerous social and political challenges. What are the major social issues confronting the Muslim world today? What political problems continue to affect contemporary Muslim societies? Keeping these questions in view, this study examines the contemporary social and political challenges faced by Muslim societies in the light of Sūrah al-Baqarah, seeking to derive Qur’ānic guidance for addressing these issues in the modern context.
