Differences in the Interpretation of the Qur'an through the Qur'an and its Effects on the Meanings of Qur'anic Verses: A Comparative Study of Tafseer Ma'ariful Qur'an and Tafseer al-Kawthar
Abstract
The Holy Qur'an is the divine revelation of Allah Almighty, sent down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and as a Prophet, it became His responsibility to explain and interpret the Qur'an and convey its commandments to the people. Many verses of the Qur'an are explained through the life and Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH). Similarly, there are numerous verses within the Qur'an that provide interpretation of other Qur'anic verses. The Prophet (PBUH) himself interpreted certain verses of the Qur'an through other verses, a method known as Tafseer al-Qur'an bil-Qur'an (interpretation of the Qur'an through the Qur'an), which scholars have recognized as the primary and foundational principle of Qur'anic exegesis.
However, there is a difference of opinion among scholars and exegetes regarding which verse explains the meaning of another verse. This difference is evident in the field of Qur'anic exegesis, where one commentator may define the meaning of a verse through another verse, while another commentator may offer a different interpretation based on a different verse, which the first commentator did not mention. How does this difference of opinion affect the meaning of a Qur'anic verse? What type of impact does it have? And based on the context of the Qur'anic verses, which interpretation aligns with the context (siyāq) of the verses, and which one contradicts it? This paper addresses these questions in detail, providing a comparative study of Ma'ariful Qur'an by Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi' and Tafseer al-Kawthar by Mohsin Ali Najafi.
