The Arabs were famous for their eloquence, narrations, and the quality of poetry. They loved poetry, organizing it and narrating it in their assemblies and clubs, in every way. And while they are like that, when ALLAH sent among them Muhammad (SAWW) among the most eloquent of all the Arab tribes, the Quraysh tribe, to which the Arabs used to rule in poetry systems. The good of it is what Quraysh accepted, and the bad of it is what Quraysh rejected. The Prophet (SAWW) did not take a hostile stance towards poetry, but gave it the character of the Islamic religion, so that it would absorb the Islamic spirit, and be a positive tool in the ranks of the Islamic call, defending it, hostile to polytheism, exposing its shortcomings. The Prophet - peace be upon him - used to denounce the poets, the poetry of promiscuity and lewdness, and the poetry that aims to arouse instincts, wound the selves, and stir up grudges. The Prophet (SAWW) memorized some of what the poets said, and he used to correct and criticize them, and what was reported from him (SAWW) about the prohibition of poetry compositions. For this, the scholars provided directives that are consistent with the true wisdom of this prohibition, and the Holy Prophet (SAWW) did not appear to oppose poetry except in some specific conditions.
